In 1974 I spent a little time in the town of Agadir on the Atlantic coast of Morocco, sleeping on the beach with a surprisingly large group of other young people. We shared everything, traded many things. A Dutch girl called Anneke had arrived recently from Afghanistan and because I taught her how to weave what are now called 'friendship bracelets' -- we sold them to tourists wherever we went -- she gave me one of her heavy roughs of lapis.
