ZARABESQUE'S GLOSSARY

Defines terms and terminology that appear on Zarabesque... a global language for the global goddess.

tajine (tah-JZEEN) - an earthenware pot or dish; the meal made in one - Berber

Tan-Tan (TAHN-tahn) - a desert city in southwestern Morocco - Berber, Arabic

Tarfaya (tahr-FI-yah) - a port town in southwestern Morocco on the Atlantic coast, close to Cape Juby - Arabic

Taza (TAH-zeh) - a terraced city in northern Morocco between the Rif and Atlas mountains - Berber, Arabic

Timbuktu (tm-buhk-TOO) - fabled caravansary in Mali on the edge of the Sahara; currently suffering desertification -

tiraz (tee-RAHZ) - terrace - Arabic

Tizi (TEH-zee) - a town in northern Algeria

Literally 'mountain pass' -
Arabic

touareg (TWAH-reg) - a nomadic people who travel the Sahara. Of Berber descent, they are also known as the 'Blue Men of the Sahara' in reference to the indigo robes they wear.

Toubkal (toob-KAL) - the highest mountain peak in North Africa located south of Marrakech in Morocco's Atlas Mountains, in a national park that bears its name - Berber, Arabic

transliteration - translation relates to the meaning of words; transliteration relates to the translation of language sounds. From the verb transliterate; to change (transcribe) letters or characters into corresponding characters of another alphabet or language. The result is a transliteration.

Because transliteration can be inexact, words like sousde are found to be spelled susti, susdi, suste, sousdi and so on as sounded out from the original Arabic, much like Hanukkah (Hanukah, Chanukkah etc.) is transliterated from Hebrew. -

trapunto (treh-POON-toh) - From the Italian for 'to embroider', a decorative topstitching technique, similar to quilting, used to bind two or more layers together, creating a raised pattern. - Italian

tulul (too-LOOL) - tulip - Arabic (dialectic)

Tunis (TOO-nis) - the largest and capitol city of Tunisia, located on the country's northern, Mediterranean coast, specifically the Gulf of Tunis. Includes the ancient city of Carthage and world-famous medinah. - Arabic
